How Do Activities Promote Healthy Aging?

Activities could be in form of physical, social, leisure and productive engagements. Engaging in various types of these activities not only improve the physical strength but put the entire body system in a perfect condition. Older adults will be doing themselves good when they engage in activities that in turn keep their body and soul in perfect form.

Study reveals that older Americans mostly make use of their time engaging in social activities, pursuing different hobbies, exercising and engaging in various community development programs by volunteering.

It is evident that engaging in any social, physical, leisure or productive activity improves one’s physical and mental strength. However, engaging in many of these activities attracts a better physical and mental health even when aging. These four activities help in promoting healthy aging among older adults because of their mental and physical benefits.

The functional capacity of older people is mostly important in relation to the way in which they can carry out and support the activities of daily living, which in turn affects their quality of life. The assessment of functional capacity includes an assessment of a person’s ability to perform various activities of daily living. Performing these functions is an integral part of measuring functional health, and it is impaired when fatigue appears.

Any form of physical activity is appropriate for anyone at any age, as long as it is not excessive in terms of general or local stress. Age does not in itself constitute an obstacle to physical exercise. The most important issue to be addressed is how physical activity can be incorporated into the lifestyle of older people.

The greater quality of life and sense of purpose is achieved among older adults who engage in fun, leisure and productive activities. All these activities are there to improve better physical and mental well-being of every older adult.

Since the brain needs social stimulation on a daily basis, social activities stimulate the brain as we joyfully interact with people. As we age, it is important to interact with new people, build new relationships and enjoy the healthy benefits of wide range social network. Social activities help to retain integrity, increase motivation, improve health and well-being, help to stay connected with the world, and so many other social benefits.

Productive activities are engagement strategy that reduce stress, support mental and emotional functions. Study says Older adults have a positive perceived health-related quality of life by consistently or increasingly engaging in productive activity especially when encountering a life event.

If access to activity options are difficult, it may hinder any older adult from taking active part in different types of activities. New activities must however be developed to promote widespread healthy aging.
