Benefits of Getting Enough Sleep for Over Age 50

If you’ve ever found yourself struggling to get enough sleep at night, you may likely find yourself feeling tired, fatigued, lethargic, and just generally lacking motivation the next morning.

Many people find themselves turning to caffeine to perk themselves up when they’re tired and lacking sleep, but this is only a temporary fix, and too much caffeine can also be dangerous and bad for your health as well.

We all need sleep, regardless of our age yet, when we’re younger it does seem as if we can get away with a few hours of sleep each night and still function relatively normally and feel okay. As we begin to grow older, however, we feel the ill-effects of a lack of sleep, not only does a lack of sleep leave you feeling tired and irritable when you’re older, but it can also negatively impact your health, which is why you need to ensure you get enough sleep.

Here are some benefits of getting enough sleep for people over age 50:

Sleep can improve your memory

It’s no coincidence that, as people grow older, some find that their memories start to suffer and they become increasingly absent minded as they grow older.  As some people grow older, they may also find themselves more susceptible to degenerative brain conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease, which is why it is so important for us to look after our brains early on in life whenever possible.

If you’re looking to improve your memory, aim to get enough sleep each night, and get yourself into a regular sleeping schedule and you may find that mentally you are much more switched on. Getting enough sleep at night generally means that your memory may improve and your cognitive health may also improve.

Sleep can increase longevity

Obviously, we never know what’s around the corner and we never know how much time we have, but there are things we can do to help increase our longevity, and getting enough sleep is certainly up there.

Studies have found that a lack of sleep can reduce your lifespan. Numerous studies have revealed that people that get less than six and a half hours sleep each night tend to live shorter lives than those who sleep for the recommended 7 – 9 hours each night.

Sleep can also affect your quality of life, which could also be a factor.

A lack of sleep can affect your activity levels

Another reason why experts recommend that people over age 50 should consider getting a sufficient amount of sleep each night, is the fact that a lack of sleep can negatively impact your activity levels.

If you’re not getting enough sleep, you may feel tired and may lack energy. If you feel tired and don’t have much energy, you  may not want to head to the gym, exercise or do any other activities.  In addition, a lack of sleep may also hinder your motivation which may keep you from being motivated to exercise and get active.  So, consider getting enough sleep over age 50 to not only make you feel better but to help you to stay healthy over age 50.
