How Do I Maintain Good Health Over 50?

In life, some things are guaranteed. Death is one, taxes is another, and the passing of time is another still. We can’t slow down the hands of time which means that we can’t yet stop ourselves from aging. What we can do however, is do everything in our power to ensure that we age as healthily as we possibly can. Once you hit the dreaded 50, it can feel as if everything becomes much more of a challenge. We find it harder to get out of bed in the morning, losing weight takes longer, gaining weight is sadly much easier, and we find ourselves suffering with aches and pains that we can’t seem to shake. Your health should be a main priority at any age, yet as you get older, this becomes more apparent than ever. To help you out, here are several health tips for people age 50 and over.

Keep active – Exercise is important at any age, but as we grow older it’s important to ensure that we remain as physically active as we possibly can. Staying active will help us to burn calories and manage our weight. Not only that, it will improve our cardiovascular fitness and will improve the health of our heart and our other important internal organs and systems. If you enjoy the gym you can exercise there, or if not, you could go walking or hiking, swimming, cycling and many other types of activities. As long as you are physically active and moving around, your health will benefit as a result.

Watch what you eat – Again, it’s important to watch what we eat at any age, yet as we grow older, we find that our bodies store fat far easier, and we find it harder to lose weight as our metabolisms slows down. When it comes to our diets, it’s important to consider our health as well as our weight. Cut way back on junk food and instead try to eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, along with whole grains, healthy fats, and lean proteins.

Consume more Omega-3s – Earlier we mentioned how you should eat enough healthy fats. This is why: Many healthy fats such as omega-3 fatty acids, provide health benefits for the brain and for the heart. Eating omega-3 fatty acids will therefore help you to keep your brain healthy, to boost your cognitive health, to avoid degenerative brain conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer’s later on in life, and to reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke, hypertension, and heart attack. Some of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids are oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, herring, and sardines.

Try to avoid stress – Stress can affect us all, at any given time. Despite this,  being over age 50, stress is considered to be particularly dangerous. Stress can lead to an increased risk of stroke and heart attack, which can be fatal. In addition, stress can also damage your mental health as well. Try to avoid unnecessary stress and relax whenever possible and do things that you enjoy and find relaxing.
