They say that 50 is the new 40, and that 40 is the new 30, and while that is all well and good on paper, the simple fact of the matter is that as we do grow older, we generally find ourselves more susceptible to a wide range of health issues which wouldn’t have bothered us decades ago. While you can’t stop the passing of time, you can slow down the ill effects of aging and growing older by taking better care of your body, your mind, and your health in general for that matter. While there are certain things you can do to look after yourself, as you do grow older and hit the dreaded 50, you will find yourself more at risk to a selection of age-related health conditions, which we will be discussed below. Here’s a look at four of the most common health concerns for people aged 50 and above. Arthritis One of the most common health concerns for people as they do grow older is arthritis. Arthritis is a common health issue that affects the joints, causing them to be swollen, inflamed, and painful. Arthritis can affect anybody, though generally it tends to affect older people simply because the longer a person has lived, the harder their joints have been used. Arthritis can cause people to become stiff and immobile, and it can make seemingly mundane tasks such as bending down, or straightening your arm, a very painful ordeal. Once a person hits 50, their chances of suffering from arthritis increase noticeably, and this only increases further as they grow older. As many as one in two adults will suffer from arthritis by the time they reach age 65. Incontinence Okay, this may be slightly embarrassing for some, but it is unfortunately a part of everyday life for a lot of people once they hit 50, and the topic in general is incontinence. Incontinence doesn’t mean that a person literally urinates on themselves and empties the entire contents of their bladders, it simply means that they may experience a little “leakage” or they experience the urge to urinate on a regular basis. The best way to combat incontinence is to practice Kegel or pelvic-floor exercises on a daily basis. Osteoporosis As if arthritis wasn’t bad enough for your joints, a similar condition is osteoporosis and it too is a real health concern for those aged 50 and over age 50. Osteoporosis is a condition in which the body struggles to produce enough new bone mass to prevent damaged and lost bone mass. The older we get, the harder the body finds it to keep up. The end result is weaker and more brittle bones which become damaged more easily. Common signs of osteoporosis include a loss of height, brittle bones more susceptible to breaks, and joint pains. A lack of energy Finally, once you do reach 50 or older, you may find yourself struggling with a lack of energy compared with how you felt a decade back or so. One of the main reasons why people suffer from a lack of energy is due to the fact that their hormones are on the decline. A drop in stable hormone levels can lead to suppression of the metabolism, as well as various other health issues. The best way to combat a lack of energy is to have your hormones tested, to eat healthy foods, stay hydrated, get enough sleep, and avoid relying on stimulants such as caffeine.

Health Tips for Over Age 50 As we grow older and find the effects of Old Father Time catching up with us, we find that things become slightly more testing than decades ago. Whereas in the past we could lose weight by simply eating a salad and walking a few hundred yards, we now find that we need to work harder to shift those stubborn pounds. What’s more, improving our health and fitness also becomes more challenging yet as we age it becomes more important than ever. Just because you’re a little longer in the tooth, that doesn’t mean that health and fitness needs to be a challenge. Here are several health and fitness tips for over age 50. Lift more weights – Okay, forget about what people say about lifting weights and ‘not wanting to get too big’ because the truth is that building muscle is notoriously difficult, and a couple of moderate weight training sessions per week is not going to transform you into a bodybuilder. What they will do however, is help you to increase your lean muscle mass slightly and ramp up your metabolism. As we age, our metabolisms decline, and we lose muscle mass. This is where lifting weights can pay dividends. You can increase your metabolism, burn fat, and slightly increase your lean muscle mass. So, sop heading straight for the treadmill and start pumping more iron instead. Stay active – As well as lifting weights when training, cardiovascular exercise is also very important. Heart disease is the worlds biggest killer, so looking after your heart is vital. Be sure to stay physically active to keep your heart in the best possible shape. Do more work in the garden, walk to the store instead of driving, go for a walk around the park, just do something other than sitting stationary for hours on end. Get plenty of calcium and vitamin D – As we grow older, we find that our bones tend to lose mass and become weaker and brittle. This can lead to osteoporosis, and other degenerative bone issues that can cause the bones to weaken and break. A great way of countering this is to increase calcium and vitamin D intakes. You see, calcium is a mineral that is absorbed by the bones, where it is used to strengthen them and protect them. We need vitamin D in order for the calcium to enter the bones, otherwise it simply goes to waste. Great sources of calcium include: Milk, cheese, dairy, and green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale. Always stretch and warm up before exercise – Before any form of physical exercise, even if it’s something as simple as a gentle hike through the countryside, you should always take the time to warm up and stretch. Warming up and stretching before exercise will reduce your risk of injuries such as torn muscles, it’ll improve athletic performance, and it’ll increase your core body temperature. Staying injury-free is obviously very beneficial, so take 5 – 10 minutes before working out, just to stretch those muscles and get warmed up.

Consider toning down on your high intensity workouts. You may think you’re up to a workout with lifting heavy weights, a long run over five miles or other intense workouts that may create an extra strain on your body. As we age, our bodies are not normally able to have the same level of workout intensity as we may have been able to do when we were younger. So, keep in mind it is important to keep active and move as we age, but we need to do what is best for our bodies as we age in order to stay healthy.

Many people wander the earth believing they lack the strength and power to achieve their goals. This negative mechanism may keep them down. You can gain motivation and live healthier, by simply telling yourself “I can do it.” Anything you put your mind to, you can do it if you really want to. By thinking positively this may assist you with being healthy as you age. You can begin to motivate yourself in thinking positively about staying healthy over age fifty, by taking a step forward to initiate a particular goal that you may set up for yourself. For example, consider to start exercising today by going for a short walk. Tomorrow, you can consider walking a little longer then the first day you may have walked. You have to be in control of your thoughts, actions and behaviors by building up the power of your mind. Nevertheless, if you do not put your mind to it and you decide that you do not want to become active, and then you may only be living a life filled with shortcomings. Your negative reflections may defeat the purpose of getting your thoughts in control and thinking positively. Saying I will do it later, is another negative reflection. This is called procrastination, which may lead to laziness. Laziness sometimes leads to weak muscles and joints, which may gradually create possible health problems. By being positive in your thinking and keeping yourself motivated this may assist you in staying healthy as you age. Take control of your thoughts. If you want to do something bad enough you will do what you have to do to get where you want to be. Consider setting goals for yourself and try to stick to your goals and maintain a positive attitude. Create a plan that can help you to reach your goals and take action each day to achieve the goals you set up for yourself. By having a positive attitude, this will give you a jumpstart to a healthier life. Keep on pushing and try not to stop once you get started, instead continue on until you reach your goals. At times, it may seem hard and you don’t think you can go on, just remember you can do it! Stay positive, stay motivated, consistent and persistent and you will be able to achieve the goals you have set up for yourself. This will make you feel better and make you a happier person in the long run. If you’re happy, you will have a positive and healthier life as you age.
